My interest in Elder Law began several years ago. My Nonnie died in 2011 after an 8-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Like most families, we didn’t know anything about elder care services until well after we needed them. Then most of what we learned was inaccurate – coming from well-meaning friends or Google searches. I practice this kind of law because I want to help other families avoid the painful mistakes we made. The same year Nonnie died, the Law Office of Heather L. Smith, P.A. was born.
Before starting my own practice, I served the people of Florida in government for nearly a decade as an Appellate Staff Attorney and Assistant County Attorney. I am Board Certified in City, County and Local Government Law, meaning that the Florida Bar recognizes me as a “legal expert: in that area. I can also advise clients in regulatory, land use and development issues. Additionally, I servesas Special Master for Contractor Licensing for Citrus County.
Over the years, I have invested in our community by volunteering time reading to the blind through the Indian River State College Radio Reading Service program at WQCS 88.9 FM. I was a past chair of the Nineteenth Circuit Florida Bar Grievance Committee: which investigates complaints against attorneys. I have also contributed my time and professional experience as a judge at high school debate tournaments.
